Los Valores Literarios

In 1913, Azorín posed a question that still haunts every serious reader: what makes literature endure? This slender, penetrating volume offers no easy answers. Instead, it stages a quiet confrontation between the literary values of the 19th century and the unsettled anxieties of the 20th, using Stendhal as his springboard into a deeply personal examination of Spanish letters. Azorín returns again and again to Cervantes, not as a monument to be venerated, but as a living conversation partner, asking what Don Quijote still has to teach a world that has outgrown its Romantic illusions. The result is less a formal critique than a meditation in essay form, one that insists we must scrutinize rather than inherit our literary traditions. For readers willing to slow down and listen to its rhythms, Los valores literarios reveals the thin membrane between past and present, showing that every generation must reinvent why the classics matter.
