Library Bookbinding

A practical handbook from 1912 that reveals the invisible labor behind library collections. Arthur Low Bailey, a binding specialist, wrote this guide to help librarians navigate the economics and craftsmanship of preserving books for public use. The core argument is striking: not every book deserves the same binding. A worn-through copy of a popular novel needs different treatment than a reference volume that sits untouched for decades. Bailey breaks down binding types, materials, and costs with the precision of someone who understood that library budgets depended on making smart decisions. For modern readers, the book functions as a time capsule, documenting techniques and standards from an era when libraries were expanding rapidly and every dollar mattered. Whether you're a practicing librarian, a book conservation enthusiast, or simply curious about the material history of reading, this manual offers a grounded look at how institutions kept knowledge accessible.
