Legends and Tales of the Harz Mountains

The Harz Mountains have long been Germany's most haunted range, where granite peaks rise through mist like the bones of old gods and every gorge echoes with voices from the deep past. This collection gathers seventy-odd legends born from that wild landscape: tales of princesses stolen by giants, knights chasing phantoms through black forests, emperors sleeping in caverns beneath the earth, and dwarves mining secrets from the mountain's heart. The centerpiece, the Legend of the Rosstrappe, tells of beautiful Brunhilda, pledged against her will to a monstrous suitor, who flees on a white horse and leaps across a chasm, only to lose her golden crown forever into the abyss below. These are not gentle nursery rhymes. They are stories of desperate courage, doomed love, and the ancient bargain between human desire and the uncaring mountains that shelter both wonder and terror. Toofie Lauder tells them with the quick, vivid energy of a fireside storyteller, letting the strange beauty of the Harz bleed through every page. For readers who feel the pull of fog-shrouded peaks and forgotten roads, this collection opens a door into a Germany that existed before the modern world drew its maps.
