Leaves from the Note-Books of Lady Dorothy Nevill

Lady Dorothy Nevill kept notebooks filled with the kind of observations no one was supposed to write down. For decades, this formidable Victorian hostess collected witticisms, scandals, and sharp-eyed commentary on the great and powerful figures who moved through her drawing rooms. Now those pages surface as a delicious time capsule: Bismarck condescends, Tennyson mumbles, Gladstone pontificates and Nevill records it all with a wry pen. She writes of art and artists, of the absurdities of social climbing, of the particular tyranny faced by clever women of her class. This isn't formal history; it's what happens when a brilliant woman turns her scrapbooks into an act of quiet rebellion. The prose fizzes with mischief, yet beneath the charm lies something sharper: a record of how the powerful actually spoke when they thought no one was listening. For readers who crave the intimate texture of vanished worlds, who want history told from behind the velvet curtain, Nevill's notebooks offer irreplaceable access.
