Leaves from St. John Chrysostom

Few voices from the early Church still ring with this much fire. Saint John Chrysostom earned his name ("golden-mouthed") through sermons that could melt marble and shame emperors. This curated collection of his writings captures that electric preaching: sharp attacks on ecclesiastical corruption, passionate defenses of the poor, and expositions of Scripture that feel less like theology lecture and more like a man shouting across centuries about what really matters. Translated by Mary H. Allies in the late nineteenth century, these selections preserve the force of Chrysostom's Greek rhetoric while making it accessible to English readers. Whether you're encountering his dismantling of wealthy congregations who neglect the needy, his fearless critiques of Constantinople's clerical elite, or his luminous explanations of Paul's letters, you're reading a saint who was exiled for his honesty and venerated for his courage. This is not gentle devotional reading. It is demanding, exhilarating, and occasionally uncomfortable. For anyone who wants to hear what prophetic Christian preaching actually sounded like when it was dangerous.
