The story centers around King Eric of Denmark during the turbulent 13th century, as he grapples with issues of loyalty, rebellion, and the intricacies of noble power plays, particularly involving his brother, the junker Christopher, and the nobleman Drost Aagé. At the start of the volume, the scene is set with King Eric arriving at Kallundborg Castle, visibly angered by the defiance shown towards him and preparing for a siege. Tension thickens as he strategizes with Count Henrik and prepares to deal with disloyal subjects and external threats. Meanwhile, Aagé finds himself in peril after a desperate encounter with a deranged robber in the dungeons of the castle. The opening highlights themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the moral dilemmas faced by the characters, setting up a complex web of political and personal conflict that unfolds throughout the narrative.
