John Chinaman on the Rand

In the gold-fevered darkness of the Witwatersrand, thousands of men from Guangdong were pulled into the belly of the mines, their bodies broken and their lives devoured by the engine of imperial wealth. This anonymous account, written in the early 1900s, stands as an unblinking record of one of history's most calculated cruelties: the systematic importation, exploitation, and abandonment of Chinese laborers under the South African sun. The author dismantles the colonial mythology of 'civilizing mission' with precision, exposing the economic machinery that turned human beings into disposable fuel for the Rand's glittering output. These are not abstract statistics but names, faces, and final breaths. The writing carries the weight of witness, refusing to look away from what empires prefer to forget. For readers seeking to understand the foundations of modern South Africa, the global history of indentured labor, or the moral bankruptcy of racialized capitalism, this book offers something rare: a primary source that names the crime while it's still being committed.
