J. Comyns Carr: Stray Memories

To the memory of my husband - those words open this tender memoir, and everything that follows bears that spirit of devoted remembrance. Alice Vansittart Strettel Carr wrote these pages in the early years after her husband J. Comyns Carr's death, filling them with the small and large moments of their life together. She paints a vivid portrait of a remarkable man: the artist who became a prolific writer, the friend to Pre-Raphaelites and literary giants, the figure who moved through the highest reaches of Victorian cultural life. What emerges is not a monument but a man - his habits, his humor, his slow courtship of her, his seriousness about art. The memoir follows their marriage through decades of London's creative ferment, capturing the personal history behind public achievement. This is a book for readers who crave the texture of historical lives, who want to understand how artists actually lived and loved, and who appreciate the particular melancholy of a wife preserving her husband's memory in prose.
