Italian Popular Tales

Here are stories told around Italian firesides for centuries, transcribed directly from the mouths of peasants and storytellers, never before polished for literary consumption. Thomas Frederick Crane undertook the remarkable labor of gathering these tales at their source, preserving the rough music of oral tradition before it faded forever. The collection ranges from fairy tales of enchanted animals and treacherous trials to ghost stories that still chill, from nursery rhymes to jest tales told in village squares. These are not the sanitized versions that entered the Brothers Grimm canon; they carry the specific texture of Italian imagination, its baroque sensuality, its Catholic guilt, its working-class wit. The opening tale, "The King of Love," follows Rosella through a labyrinth of consequences after her curiosity leads her husband to vanish into the realm of the supernatural a story of obedience and transgression that feels both ancient and startlingly modern. This is the raw material of a culture's dreaming, offered to English readers with scholarly care but never with the sterilizing touch of academia. These tales belong to anyone who has ever sat in the dark and listened for something wondrous.
