International Bridge Authority, Sault Ste. Marie

Two cities, one name, separated by a river and a border. This is the story of how they built a bridge between them. The International Bridge connecting Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario represents something rare in world history: nations choosing to build rather than fortify. The book chronicles the political machinations, engineering ambitions, and sheer human stubborness required to span the St. Mary's River, a waterway vital to shipping yet demanding to bridge. Through personal accounts from engineers, construction workers, and border residents, we see how this structure transformed two isolated Northern communities into connected hubs of trade and cultural exchange. The International Bridge Authority emerges not merely as a administrative body but as proof that cooperation can be built as concretely as any roadway. The book details toll systems, modernization efforts, and the daily negotiations of maintaining infrastructure that answers to two different governments. For anyone fascinated by the mundane miracles that connect our world, this is a quietly radical story about what we choose to build together.
