Inside Illinois: Mineral Resources

Beneath the cornfields and prairie grass of Illinois lies a geological treasure chest. This authoritative survey, produced by the Illinois State Geological Survey, reveals the ancient forces and mineral wealth that shaped the state and fueled its industrial rise. The book begins with a clear-eyed tour of Earth's interior structure, then systematically uncovers what lies beneath Illinois: the vast coal seams that powered the nation's railroads, the petroleum reservoirs that made the region indispensable, and the lesser-known minerals embedded in its bedrock. Through meticulous explanation of geological processes, readers gain not just a catalog of resources but an understanding of how time, pressure, and chemistry conspired to create them. Originally published in the mid-20th century, this volume remains a foundational text for geologists, educators, and anyone curious about the natural foundations of the Prairie State. It is, at its heart, a story of the ground beneath our feet and the ancient chemistry that made modern Illinois possible.
