Human Animals

The impulse to become something other than human runs deeper than history. It runs into the bones of every culture that ever told stories around a fire. Frank Hamel's 1915 study excavates this ancient, unsettling longing: the belief that men could become wolves, women could slip into seal skin, witches could vanish into cats, and the boundary between human and beast was far more permeable than modernity would prefer. This is not a bestiary of fiction but an archive of conviction - drawn from Norse sagas, African villages, medieval witch trials, Greek mythology, and the secret manuals of sorcerers. Hamel catalogs how transformation was believed to happen: wearing an animal's skin, applying a particular ointment, meeting a wer-creature in the moonlight, or simply being cursed by a mind more powerful than your own. The book reads less like dry anthropology and more like a cabinet of curiosities, each chapter opening onto a tale strange enough to make you double-check the world you think you know. For anyone who has ever felt more beast than human, or who wonders what our ancestors really believed lived inside them, this remains an extraordinary guide to the dark poetry of metamorphosis.
