How Old Is It? The Story of Dating in Archeaology

Every object holds a secret date. The question is how to read it. This is the story of the scientists who learned to decode time itself, turning dirt and artifacts into legible histories. James Schoenwetter introduces us to the remarkable men and women who built archaeology's temporal toolkit: the dendrochronologists who counted tree rings like the rings of a vast, silent clock; the radiocarbon pioneers who measured the decay of atoms as a kind of atomic hourglass; the stratigraphers who understood that deeper means older, and that the earth itself keeps records. Schoenwetter distinguishes between absolute clocks, which give us specific years, and relative clocks, which merely tell us what came before what. Both prove essential. He walks us through varve analysis, crossdating, seriation, and the geologic-climatic method, showing how each technique adds another layer to our ability to place human activity on a timeline. The book captures the intellectual thrill of building chronological order from scattered evidence, and it makes clear why this matters: we cannot understand who we are without knowing when we were here.
