Household Organization

In 1877, Florence Caddy wrote a book for a world in transition. The great Victorian households were losing their servants. Economic pressures demanded new economies. And middle-class women, suddenly required to manage their homes with fewer hands, needed guidance. What emerged is both a practical manual and a fascinating window into a society relearning domestic life. Caddy offers concrete advice on organizing kitchens, scheduling workloads, and cultivating what she calls 'household sense' - that intuitive grasp of domestic management that previous generations had outsourced. But beneath the practical tips lies a quieter argument: that meaningful involvement in one's own home is not drudgery but a form of self-reliance worth reclaiming. The prose has that satisfying Victorian quality of moral purpose wrapped in practical wisdom. For readers curious about how people actually lived, organized, and thought about their homes before the modern age, this little guide proves surprisingly revealing.
