Heathen Mythology, Illustrated by Extracts from the Most Celebrated Writers, Both Ancient and Modern

Before comparative mythology became a formal discipline, Victorians satisfying a hungry public appetite for ancient lore assembled works like this: ambitious compendiums that gathered the gods of Greece, Rome, India, and Scandinavia between two covers. This 1842 collection does more than retell myths. It lets the ancients speak for themselves through carefully selected extracts from Homer, Ovid, the Eddas, and dozens of other celebrated writers, both ancient and contemporary to the compilers. The result is a peculiar artifact: part anthology, part scholarly reference, part time capsule of how the Victorian educated class understood the divine tales that shaped civilization. The philosophical preface meditates on why humans first invented gods, how early peoples personified natural forces and found spirituality in storms, harvests, and the turning of seasons. For readers today, it offers both genuine insight into ancient belief systems and a fascinating window into how those beliefs were interpreted a century and a half ago.
