Harrods for Everything

This is not a novel. It's a portal. Published by the world's most famous department store in its Edwardian prime, this catalog captures a vanished moment when Harrods promised to supply everything the British Empire might desire. Page through these listings and you'll find not just prices but an entire worldview: where a gentleman could order his shooting boots alongside medical instruments, where a memsahib in Calcutta could request English curry powder and trust it would arrive by post. The range staggers the modern imagination, from diamond tiaras to garden shears, from Panama hats to live poultry. What emerges is more than merchandise. It's a functioning fantasy of empire, of global reach, of the confidence that somewhere, in a warehouse off Knightsbridge, everything worth wanting was already in stock, waiting to be dispatched. For historians of material culture, for nostalgia enthusiasts, for anyone curious about what shopping looked like before it was called retail, this catalog is a mesmerizing artifact. It asks a question that still echoes: what does it mean to want everything?
