Gypsy Folk-Tales

These are not the fairy tales of your childhood. Francis Hindes Groome, who lived among Romani communities across Europe, transcribed these tales as he heard them: raw, earthy, often shocking, full of tricksters and transformations and moral ambiguity. He made no attempt to smooth away inconsistencies or soften the edges. The result is a window into a vanishing world, stories passed down through generations by word of mouth before they could be fixed to the page. Groome hypothesized that the nomadic Roma served as conduits for spreading stories across Eurasia, carrying narrative seeds that took root in cultures from Portugal to Persia. Whether or not you accept that diffusionist theory, the stories themselves are mesmerizing: enchanted animals, cunning fools, journeys of transformation, families torn apart and reunited. These are the universal motifs that recur across continents and centuries. This is folklore before it became folklore studies: dangerous, alive, often very funny, occasionally quite dark.
