George Cruikshank (Gutenberg Index)

George Cruikshank was the visual conscience of Victorian Britain, and this index gathers his scattered legacy into one place. A prolific caricaturist who witnessed three decades of radical social transformation, Cruikshank skewered the powerful with a pen and ink line sharper than any sword. His illustrations chronicled the political upheavals, social hypocrisies, and cultural absurdities of an empire convincing itself of its own righteousness. This compilation catalogs his satirical prints, book illustrations, and political cartoons from the era when images could topple ministries and expose corruption. From his early works attacking the Prince Regent to his later moralistic engravings, the collection captures an artist who used humor as a weapon and beauty as a shield. For historians of visual culture, collectors of Victorian ephemera, and anyone curious about how images shaped public opinion before photography, this index serves as both reference and revelation.
