Forty-Five Years of Digitizing Ebooks: Project Gutenberg's Practices

Project Gutenberg revolutionized access to literature. Founded in 1971, it became the first major digital library, offering thousands of books free to readers worldwide. This detailed study traces forty-five years of the organization's digitization practices, from early manual typing efforts to modern distributed proofreading systems. Gregory B. Newby, a former Project Gutenberg director, draws on archival research and personal experience to examine how volunteers created the infrastructure that made millions of out-of-copyright works available to anyone with an internet connection. The book explores the technical challenges of preserving textual integrity, the evolution of markup standards, and the debates over digitization ethics that shaped the movement. For digital humanists, librarians, and anyone curious about how the internet transformed literary access, this book offers an authoritative behind-the-scenes look at one of culture's most ambitious democratization projects.
