Folk-Tales of the Khasis

These are not museum pieces. They are living stories from the Khasi hills of Northeast India, gathered in the early twentieth century when such collections were nearly impossible to make. The Khasi people, an indigenous community with their own language and matrilineal traditions, passed these tales through generations before Mrs. Rafy committed them to print. What Makes the Eclipse opens the collection with a tiger, a beautiful maiden named Ka Nam, and a magician's realm: danger, transformation, and the gods themselves explaining why the sun disappears. These stories carry the weight of oral tradition, where love is never separate from loss, loyalty from sacrifice, and natural phenomena from the human need to make sense of a bewildering world. This is folklore with teeth, not the sanitized kind. For anyone seeking myth as it was actually told, rather than as scholars later polished it, these Khasi tales offer something increasingly rare: a window into how one people imagined their place in a universe full of tigers and magic and beauty that could get you killed.
