Field Book: Pennsylvanian Plant Fossils of Illinois

A time machine hides in the rocky hills of Illinois. This is the field guide that unlocks it. Pennsylvanian plant fossils represent some of the oldest complex vegetation on Earth, preserved in remarkable detail across Illinois coal seams and shale deposits for roughly 300 million years. Romayne Skartvedt and Charles Collinson provide the practical knowledge needed to walk into creek beds and strip mines and return with evidence of ancient forests, long extinct ferns, and the lush swamp ecosystems that would eventually become the coal powering the modern world. The book pairs detailed illustrations with clear identification guidance, walking beginners through the major plant groups: seed ferns, scale trees, and the strange cordaites that dominated this era. Each fossil tells a story of climate, catastrophe, and the slow march of botanical evolution. For anyone who has ever picked up a strange rock pattern and wondered, this guide provides the keys to reading it.
