Evidences of Progress Among Colored People

Evidences of Progress Among Colored People

Evidences of Progress Among Colored People

G. F. Richings

This book is an act of resistance disguised as documentation. Written in an era when racist pseudo-science and lynching newspapers conspired to deny Black humanity, G.F. Richings assembled an irrefutable case for the progress of Colored People since emancipation. He turned the establishment's own records and statistics against it, proving what the dominant culture refused to acknowledge. The scope is ambitious: education, business, entrepreneurship, civic institutions, professional achievement. Richings documented Black colleges producing doctors and lawyers, Black-owned businesses thriving despite impossible odds, entire communities building themselves from nothing. This was not hopeful advocacy but empirical rebuttal, facts laid out to silence the lie of Black inferiority. What gives the book its urgency is its context. In an age when Booker T. Washington himself was toning down his message to survive, when Du Bois was barely beginning his counter-argument, Richings compiled evidence that needed no apology. It remains a historical artifact of quiet, furious defiance: the insistence on being seen, counted, and recognized.
