Essay on the Principles of Translation

Long before translation studies existed as a discipline, Alexander Fraser Tytler set down the principles that still govern how we think about moving texts between languages. Written in the late 18th century, this compact treatise asks a question that every translator, writer, and reader has grappled with: what exactly makes a translation good? Tytler argues that fidelity to the meaning of the original is not enough. A translation must also capture the spirit, the feeling, the very character of the source work. He systematically examines the tensions between faithfulness and fluency, the challenges of rendering idiom and wit across cultural barriers, and the translator's perpetual negotiation between the author's voice and the target language's demands. Though written over two centuries ago, this essay anticipates nearly every debate that would roil translation theory in the twentieth century. It remains essential reading for anyone interested in how meaning survives its journey between tongues.
