El Morro Trails: El Morro National Monument, New Mexico

For over four centuries, travelers crossing the high desert of western New Mexico have stopped at the same place: a shallow pool carved into a massive sandstone bluff, their only reliable water source in a parched and punishing landscape. El Morro National Monument, also known as Inscription Rock, holds the voices of the past written directly into stone - Spanish explorers from the 1600s, Mexican traders, Mormon pioneers, and American soldiers all left their names, dates, and sometimes lengthy testimonials carved into the soft rock face. This guidebook, published by the Southwest Parks and Monuments Association, is the essential companion for anyone walking among these ancient signatures. It maps every trail, explains the geology that created the famous 'tinaja' (natural water tank), and unpacks the layered history of a place where civilizations collided and left their marks for the next traveler to discover. The Inscription Trail loops around the base of the monument, bringing visitors face to face with carvings in Spanish, English, and Hebrew - a strange, silent parliament of ghosts. Whether you're a serious hiker or a casual visitor drawn by the romance of the Old West, this book ensures you won't miss a single story etched in stone.
