Dissertation on the Gipseys

One of the first systematic attempts by a European scholar to catalog and explain the Romani people, this 18th-century dissertation approaches its subject with the confident rationalism of the Enlightenment while revealing the limitations of that era's anthropology. Grellmann, a German professor, gathered accounts, interviews, and historical documents to construct a portrait of a people who had long fascinated and alarmed European communities: their distinctive customs, seasonal migrations, trades, family structures, and their mysterious origins in the East. The work reads as both genuine intellectual curiosity and colonial-era Othering, capturing how Enlightenment scholars could be rigorous observers while simultaneously laying ideological groundwork for persecution. For modern readers, the text serves as an invaluable time capsule: not of Romani life itself, but of how Europeans of this period perceived and constructed the 'Gypsy' as an exotic mystery to be solved. It is essential reading for anyone studying the history of European racism, the evolution of ethnographic method, or the long and troubled relationship between scholarship and the peoples it claims to describe.
