Dictionary of Battles

Here is a battlefield in book form: 320 battles spanning three millennia, from the plains of Marathon to the trenches of the Second Boer War. Thomas Benfield Harbottle compiled this encyclopedic reference in 1904, distilling the essential facts of each engagement into crisp, authoritative entries that prioritize clarity over spectacle. This is not narrative history but functional history, designed for the scholar, the writer, or the armchair general who needs to verify when exactly the Battle of Thermopylae occurred, who commanded at Tanna, or what made the Siege of Lucknow significant. The scope is staggering: ancient Rome, medieval crusades, Napoleonic campaigns, and the colonial wars of the Victorian era all receive their due. Reading it reveals the Victorian obsession with order and completeness applied to the chaos of war. For anyone researching military history, writing historical fiction, or simply fascinated by the architecture of conflict, this dictionary is an indispensable tool that rewards random browsing as much as targeted consultation.
