Des Waldbauern Friedel

The year is 1730. In the mountain meadows of Salzburg, an elderly forest farmer named Andreas and his young orphaned grandson Friedel live a humble life among their small herd. But the shadow of the Archbishop's rule falls across their valley. As Protestant believers, they face a choice: abandon their faith or lose everything. This is the intimate heart of Margarete Lenk's novel: a story of one man teaching a child what it means to hold fast to conviction when the world demands compromise. Lenk writes with quiet urgency about the particular cruelties of religious persecution, the way it fractures communities and forces families onto roads of exile. The landscape itself becomes a character, the Salzburg mountains both sanctuary and prison. What distinguishes this novel is its scale. This is not a grand epic of religious warfare but a private story about what we owe each other across generations. Andreas imparts not just doctrine but courage. Friedel must learn, while still a child, what it means to belong to something larger than safety. Written in 1912, Des Waldbauern Friedel speaks to the eternal question of how we preserve who we are when the state demands we become someone else.
