De Vurige Oven: Een Verhaal Uit Den Tijd Der Dragonades in Nederland

In the sweltering summer of 1836, a farmer named Klaas Beukman guides a young preacher named Buddingh through the Dutch countryside, traveling by night to reach a secret religious meeting. They move like outlaws, because that is precisely what they have become: members of the Afgescheidenen, the Seceders who broke from the Dutch Reformed Church in 1834 to worship according to their conscience. The state has responded with heavy fines, confiscation, and exclusion, a campaign of quiet brutality against men and women whose only crime is their faith. J.A. Wormser's novel, titled with deliberate gravity after the French Dragonades, resurrects this forgotten episode of Dutch history with intimate, textured detail. The story pulses with the fear of discovery and the fierce warmth of community held together by shared conviction. For readers drawn toHidden histories, religious minorities, and the eternal tension between belief and authority, this novel offers a window into a world where a simple prayer meeting could mean ruin.
