Croatian Tales of Long Ago

These are newly minted tales that feel ancient, drawn from the deep well of Slavic mythology and the pre-Christian folklore of Croatia. Written in 1916 by Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, this collection pulses with a primal magic. Here are talking animals and cursed kings, clever peasants who outwit giants, spirits that dwell in rivers and forests. The writing carries the cadence of oral tradition, as if these stories were always waiting to be told. Brlić-Mažuranić was nominated for the Nobel Prize, and her work has been compared to both Andersen and Tolkien for the way she built entire mythological worlds from fragments of folk memory. This is a book that invites readers into a Croatia that existed before history, where the landscape itself is alive with wonder and peril. It endures because it did what no one else had done: it claimed the ancient Slavic imagination as worthy of literary permanence.
