Crayon portraiture : Complete instructions for making crayon portraits on…

Before photography became ubiquitous, portraiture was a craft practiced by thousands of working artists. This 19th-century manual captures that world at its height, offering detailed instructions for creating crayon portraits, a technique that bridged photography and fine art. Barhydt guides readers through the entire process: preparing surfaces, layering pigments, achieving lifelike skin tones, and incorporating watercolor washes for depth. The book also covers photographic enlargements, showing how artists could project photographs onto paper or canvas to transfer compositions - a revolutionary technique for its time. Though the language is Victorian in its verbosity, the practical wisdom remains useful. Today, this manual appeals to art historians curious about historical techniques, traditional media artists seeking lost methods, and anyone fascinated by the pre-digital craft of image-making.
