Crania Ægyptiaca

Crania Ægyptiaca is an 1839 scientific study in which American physician Samuel George Morton catalogs and measures Egyptian cranial remains, primarily collected by archaeologist George R. Gliddon from tombs across Egypt. Morton meticulously records skull capacities, facial angles, and physical dimensions, then compares these specimens to crania from other geographic populations. His explicit aim: to establish a scientific taxonomy of human races and determine their relative intellectual capacities based on cranial morphology. The work represents a foundational text of American polygenism, the now-discredited theory that human races represent separate created species with distinct innate abilities. Morton's measurements were precise for their era, but his interpretive framework imposed racist hierarchies onto anatomical data, concluding that ancient Egyptians resembled modern European populations rather than African ones. The book mattered in its time because it dressed racial hierarchy in the language of empirical science, lending false authority to theories of white supremacy. Today it stands as a disturbing artifact revealing how 19th century anthropology served as handmaiden to colonialism and slavery.
