Cottage scenes during the cholera : being extracts from a diary written in…

In the summer of 1832, cholera descended on the small parish of Plympton St. Mary with the swift cruelty of a plague. Reverend William Isaac Coppard kept a diary through those terrible months, and what survives is something far more powerful than a historical record. It is a witness. We feel the panic in the village lanes, the sudden silences where families once gathered, the clergyman moving from sickbed to sickbed with nothing but prayer and rudimentary remedies to offer against a disease no one understood. Coppard records the names. He notes who died on Tuesday and who was buried on Thursday. He wrestles with his faith as neighbour turns on neighbour, as the strong abandon the weak, as children are orphaned in a single night. Yet there is also extraordinary courage here, small acts of mercy that cut through the devastation like light through fog. This is epidemic as lived experience, not statistic. It is 19th-century England confronting the unknowable, and one man trying to serve his flock as the world he knows collapses around him.
