Confessions of a Tradesman

Before Frank Thomas Bullen became a celebrated writer of the sea, he was a boy navigating the brutal economics of Victorian London. This semi-autobiographical account follows a young tradesman through the labyrinth of small shops, demanding customers, and relentless financial pressure that defined working-class existence in the city. Bullen captures the raw texture of youth spent running errands for shopkeepers, the constant anxiety of making ends meet, and the small humiliations and unexpected kindnesses that shape a man's character. The narrative moves through the streets of London with documentary precision, revealing a world where a single bad week could mean the difference between solvency and ruin. This is not a romanticized tale of self-made success, but a clear-eyed reckoning with what it costs to survive in trade. The book endures because it speaks to anyone who has ever traded their time for security, who has felt the weight of invoices and the terror of failure.
