Confessions of a Thug

In 1839, a British police official sat in an Indian prison and listened to a dying man's confession. That man was Ameer Ali, and his story would become one of the most sensational novels of the nineteenth century, introducing the word 'thug' into the English language and captivating readers including Queen Victoria. Written by Philip Meadows Taylor, who uncovered the Thuggee cult as a Superintendent of Police in India, this novel blurs the line between ethnographic document and gripping fiction. Ameer Ali recounts his transformation from orphaned child to devoted follower of a secret religious society that worshipped the goddess Kali through ritual mass murder and robbery. But this is no simple crime confession: Taylor grants his narrator genuine interiority, exploring how loyalty, trauma, and religious conviction can make murder feel like devotion. The result is a chilling, psychologically complex portrait of a man who saw himself not as a killer but as a faithful servant. Nearly two centuries later, the novel remains a disturbing meditation on identity, confession, and the darkness that can hide behind faith.
