Concerning Cats: My Own and Some Others

This is a love letter to a single cat, rendered with the precision of a portrait painter and the dry humor of a late-Victorian essayist. Helen M. Winslow's collection centers on the Pretty Lady, a gray tabby of such refined sensibilities that she appears to consider herself a duchess in exile. The opening essays trace their years together: the Pretty Lady's journeys, her moods, her particular ways of-bestowing or withholding affection. Winslow writes with specificity rather than sentimentality, cataloging the small dignities and mysteries of cat personality. The later chapters broaden to other feline encounters, but always with the same attentive eye. What emerges is not a generic celebration of cats but a portrait of one particular creature, and through her, an argument for taking animals seriously as individuals. The prose has survived because it captures something true about the peculiar bargain of cat ownership: we serve, we are tolerated, and somehow that arrangement becomes precious.
