Comb Honey

A remarkably detailed early 20th century guide to one of beekeeping's most delicate arts: harvesting honey still sealed in its natural comb. Written for commercial beekeepers by a USDA specialist, this handbook covers everything from hive management and timing to the wooden sections and foundations that shape the final product. Demuth understood that comb honey commands premium prices precisely because it arrives at the table untouched, the wax cappings intact, the honey inside untouched by centrifugal force. The writing reflects an era when agricultural extension agents wrote with genuine reverence for their subjects, blending precise instructions with appreciation for the bees' own craftsmanship. Beyond technique, the book captures a moment when American beekeeping was transforming from small-scale hobby to commercial enterprise, and when the visual perfection of comb honey mattered enough to warrant a federal publication. For modern readers, it offers both practical beekeeping insights and a window into a vanished agricultural world where the beauty of the product was considered as important as its yield.
