Chambers's Journal of Popular Literature, Science, and Art, Fifth Series, No. 145, Vol. III, October 9, 1886

This is a portal to Victorian England in its most curious frame of mind. The October 1886 issue of Chambers's Journal gathers essays that span from Gothic architecture to geological speculation to the odd sociology of Fleet Street romances. The standout piece traces secret chambers hidden in manor houses, where priests once eluded soldiers during times of persecution, weaving architectural mystery through the stones of Raglan Castle and Plowden Hall. Elsewhere, the industrial age intrudes with unsettling questions about what happens to the land when we mine beneath it. The whole thing feels like a Victorian mind thinking out loud: speculative, well-read, and never bored. For readers who want to step inside the head of 1886, this is a perfectly preserved specimen.
