Awdeley's Fraternitye of Vacabondes, Harman's Caueat, Haben's Sermon, &c.

Imagine Elizabethan London at night. Beyond the Globe and the royal court exists a shadow world of pickpockets, confidence tricksters, and vagrants. This collection, compiled from three Tudor writers, pulls back the curtain on that hidden world with startling specificity. John Awdeley, Thomas Harman, and Parson Haben were 16th-century chroniclers who documented the criminal underbelly. Their tracts catalog the slang, the tricks, the social structures of England's underworld. Here you'll find the earliest known dictionaries of "canting" - the secret language thieves used to communicate without being understood. Harman's "Caueat" warns against the cunning of modern con artists. Haben delivers his sermon to the poor and idle. Together, these texts form one of the first true crime investigations in English history. What makes this endure isn't just historical curiosity. It's the glimpse into a parallel society, one that mirrored official England with its own hierarchies, its own jargon, its own survival rules. For readers fascinated by slang, by crime, by the secret histories we're not taught in school.
