Aus Meinem Königreich: Tales from the Carpathian Mountains

Carmen Sylva, Queen of Romania and friend of Queen Victoria, gathered these tales from the mountain villages of her kingdom in the late 1800s. As a foreign-born princess who became queen, she listened to the old storytellers and recorded what she heard before it faded. The result is a collection that reads less like a Victorian noblewoman's anthology and more like a dispatch from a world where the Carpathian forests still held secrets. The stories range from tender romances like 'Piatra Arsa', where a young woman named Pauna waits for her beloved Tannas, wounded in war, tending him back to health through devotion alone, to darker tales of tricksters, cursed objects, and the thin membrane between the human and supernatural worlds. This book endures as a window into Romanian cultural memory, a time capsule of village tales before the modern age reshaped these mountains.
