Asser's Life of King Alfred

This is one of the rarest surviving windows into the 9th century, written by a Welsh monk who actually lived in King Alfred's court. Asser composed this intimate portrait around 893 AD, giving us details no later historian could fabricate: Alfred's daily routines, his struggles with an unnamed illness, his obsessive drive to learn Latin in his thirties, his tears over psalms he couldn't yet read. We see a king who quote Latin poetry from memory yet confessed he felt 'ashamed' of his ignorance, who built schools and translated works while fighting Vikings for his kingdom's survival. The biography's power lies in its rawness and immediacy. Here is England's only crowned king rendered human, ambitious, pious, and desperate. The original manuscript burned in 1731, but earlier copies preserved this irreplaceable document: the most substantial contemporary account of any early English ruler, and one of the earliest surviving medieval biographies in the British Isles.
