Armenia and Her People; or, The Story of Armenia

This is an urgent, intimate record from the heart of a dying century. George H. Filian, an Armenian pastor banished from his homeland, writes with the desperate clarity of a man watching his people disappear. The book surveys Armenian geography and ancient history, but its power lies in what Filian witnessed firsthand: the cultural richness of his people alongside the mounting horrors of persecution in the late Ottoman Empire. Filian documents Armenian life with precision and love, then turns unflinching eyes to the atrocities committed against his countrymen. This was written in 1896, years before the Genocide but during the Hamidian massacres, a window into the catastrophe yet to come, captured by someone inside it. The author's exile gives every sentence weight; he is writing from distance, but his heart remains in Armenia. For anyone seeking to understand the Armenian experience, this is a primary source of profound historical and human value.
