Apparitions and thought-transference: an examination of the evidence for…

In the late Victorian era, when séance rooms proliferated across London and educated society debated the boundaries between science and the supernatural, Frank Podmore undertook something radical: a rigorous, skeptical examination of telepathic communication. As a founding member of the Society for Psychical Research, Podmore applied the era's finest empirical methods to claims that thought could travel between minds without physical intermediary. This book presents his meticulous survey of experimental evidence, spontaneous cases, and the peculiar testimonials that surrounded thought-transference. Podmore catalogs experiments with card-guessing and distance communication, weighs testimony from credible witnesses, and interrogates the statistical probabilities underlying paranormal claims. The result is neither a celebration of the mysterious nor a dismissal it is a scientist's honest reckoning with evidence that stubbornly refuses to confirm or deny. For anyone curious about how rational people in the age of Darwin and Freud grappled with the edges of consciousness, this remains a fascinating artifact of intellectual history.
