Andreas Vesalius, the Reformer of Anatomy

Vesalius didn't just correct anatomy. He corrected humanity's view of itself. In 16th-century Europe, medicine was frozen in antiquity. Physicians believed Galen, the ancient Greek physician, had exhaustively described the human body. There was just one problem: Galen had never dissected a human. He described the jaw as two bones, the liver as having five lobes, and countless other errors that went unchallenged for 1,400 years. Then came a young Flemish professor who picked up the scalpel. Andreas Vesalius insisted on cutting into actual human corpses, a practice considered beneath physicians and fit only for barbers. His "De Humani Corporis Fabrica" (1543) shattered Galen's errors in meticulous detail, with illustrations so precise they still stun. The medical establishment recoiled. He was accused of impiety, of disturbing the dead, of ambition beyond his station. The cost was devastating. Vesalius burned his own manuscripts, abandoned his chair at Padua, and died alone on a ship returning from a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. But he had already done the impossible: he founded modern anatomy and proved that direct observation mattered more than ancient authority. This is his story, and the price he paid for telling the truth.
