An Essay on the State of England

An Essay on the State of England, written by John Cary in the late 17th century, is an economic treatise examining the interplay between trade, taxation, and the poor in England during a time of war with France. Cary analyzes how to improve England's trade to ensure financial stability and prosperity while addressing the burdens of taxation. He emphasizes the importance of land, manufacturing, and foreign trade as key components of national wealth, proposing strategies for economic growth and prudent taxation policies to support the war effort without overburdening the economy.
