An Adventure

In August 1901, two distinguished Oxford academics visited the Petit Trianon at Versailles expecting nothing more than an afternoon stroll through royal grounds. What they encountered defied all explanation. The gardens seemed to exist in another era. Figures in period dress moved through the landscape. And at the heart of it all, they believed they saw her: Marie Antoinette herself, walking the grounds she had once called home. Charlotte Moberly and Eleanor Jourdain, respectable, rational women of the Edwardian establishment, returned from their excursion shaken and uncertain. Their account, published under pseudonyms in 1911, caused an immediate sensation. Skeptics rushed to offer explanations: hoax, hallucination, elaborate prank. But the authors insisted, with quiet desperation, that they had experienced something they could not rationalize away. The controversy has never fully subsided. More than a century later, the account retains its uncanny power, forcing readers to confront the unsettling possibility that the past might not always stay buried, and that sometimes the most improbable witnesses tell the most disturbing truths.
