African Colonization

A primary source from 1855 that captures one of the most controversial solutions proposed to America's slavery problem. David Christy, writing for the American Colonization Society, makes the case for 'African colonization' - the plan to establish colonies in Liberia for freed and emigrating Black Americans. The book documents the Society's work, conditions in early colonies, and the religious and moral arguments used to support the movement. What makes this text essential is how it reveals the assumptions and contradictions of mid-19th century colonization advocates: their genuine (if paternalistic) concern for Black Americans, their belief in colonization as the answer to racial tension, and their close relationship with Christian missionary work in Africa. The text provides valuable contemporary accounts of early Liberia, the challenges faced by settlers, and the complex politics of the colonization movement. For anyone studying American history, the abolition movement, or the origins of Liberia as a nation, this is an indispensable primary document that shows exactly how Colonization Society leaders thought about freedom, race, and America's future.
