Book digitized by Google from the library of the New York Public Library and uploaded to the Internet Archive by user tpb. 631, [1] pages, 3 unnumbered leaves of plates : 23 cm Volume of humorous sketches, observations and digressions occasioned by the Clemens family's trip to Europe from spring 1878 until autumn 1879. ‡b Their travels took them primarily through Germany and Switzerland, with final stops in France and Italy. During the summer of 1878, Twain made a month-long tramp in the Black Forest and Swiss Alps with his friend, Reverend Joseph Twitchell (named Harris in the book). As the author advised, it was a book "written by one loafer for a brother loafer to read." Bibliography of American literature lists 2 states of the frontispiece, and 2 states of the cover stamping. The sheets of the text block bulk either 1 3/8" or 1 5/8"; there seems to be no doubt that the earliest copies were printed on thicker paper. Some copies have a code number stamped on lower cover.
