A Selection of Books Published

This is a publisher's catalog from summer 1919, a moment suspended between the end of the Great War and the beginning of the Roaring Twenties. Methuen & Co., established London publishers, here present their current list: hundreds of titles spanning fiction, history, theology, art, travel, children's stories, and practical handbooks. The catalog captures a civilization taking stock of itself after four years of devastation, still hungry for knowledge, entertainment, and the consolations of literature. What makes this document remarkable is what it reveals about early 20th-century publishing culture. Here in one slim volume sits the entire intellectual landscape of the time: Shakespeare editions alongside new fiction, architectural studies next to religious meditations, health manuals beside poetry collections. The range speaks to an era when a single publisher could serve as a cultural arbiter, curating what the reading public would encounter. For book historians, bibliographers, and anyone curious about the material culture of reading, this catalog is a small time machine.
