A journey round my room

In 1794, a young French aristocrat fights a duel, is sentenced to 42 days confined to his room, and decides to write a travelogue. What follows is one of literature's most delightful con jobs: a serious, scholarly account of a room thirty-six steps in circumference, complete with imagined expeditions to the furniture, philosophical meditations on the view from the window, and imaginary conversations with classical worthies. De Maistre transforms his imprisonment into a witty defense of interior freedom, arguing that the true traveler needs no passport, no map, only imagination. The bed becomes a mountain range, the desk a vast plain, and solitude becomes a kingdom. Part philosophical essay, part parody of travel literature, part tender meditation on absence and memory, this tiny book pulses with the radical idea that happiness cannot be found in exotic destinations but in the kingdom of one's own mind. Two centuries later, it remains a charming provocation: how we occupy our own confinement, and what kind of travelers we become when the world shrinks to four walls.
