A Half Century Among the Siamese and the Lāo: An Autobiography
In 1858, a young Princeton-trained missionary named Daniel McGilvary arrived in Siam and would not return home for fifty-three years. This is his story: a chronicle of faith, endurance, and discovery in the forgotten reaches of the Mekong region. McGilvary recounts his early work in Bangkok and Pechaburi, where he stumbled upon a village of speakers of an unknown tongue, setting his life's course. Then came the extraordinary journey: pushing a small boat six hundred miles up the great river into what maps labeled "unknown territory," arriving at the city of Chiengmai in 1867. There, with Dr. Jonathan Wilson, he built something that had never existed before: a Protestant mission among the Lao peoples. The decades that followed brought loneliness, danger, and privation, but also the slow, painstaking work of translation, teaching, and community-building at the edge of the Western world. Published in 1912, a year after his death, this autobiography preserves not only one man's remarkable life but the foundational narrative of American Presbyterian mission work in northern Thailand. For readers drawn to histories of first contact, of missionaries who became bridges between worlds, this is an indispensable primary source.
